A Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) is an infection that is transmitted through sexual activity from a person who is infected, to another who is not. Unprotected oral, anal or vaginal sex and unprotected genital/genital contact are ways an STI can be shared.
Infections that can be transmitted via sexual activity most commonly are chlamydia, gonorrhea, trichomonas and HIV/AIDS. Yeast and bacteria can be sexually transmitted, but women commonly get them for other reasons (i.e., taking antibiotics, birth control pills). HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis B can be transmitted by sexual activity or sharing needles for IV drug use. Herpes, though sexually transmitted, can also be transmitted by non-sexual kissing.
