What is the The Abortion pill?
The abortion pill, also referred to as medication abortion, is made of two drugs that stop the pregnancy's development, and causes a miscarriage.
It was developed in the 1980's and approved for use in the United States in the year 2000, and is between 94% and 99% effective.
The abortion pill is not the morning after pill. The morning after pill prevents pregnancies, the abortion pill terminates pregnancies.
The Abortion Pill is for pregnancies up to 11 weeks.
When Do I Take It?
Mifepristone followed by Misoprostol can be taken up to 11 weeks or 77 days after the beginning of the last menstrual period. In other words, you can use these medications to end your pregnancy if you are no more than 11 weeks and 0 days pregnant.
It is successful between 94% and 99% of the time, depending on the gestational age of your pregnancy. If it is not successful, we will re-evaluate you and complete the procedure with an in-patient early abortion or repeat of the medication.
How Does it Work?
Medication Abortion is made of two drugs, Mifepristone and Misoprostol. You can take Mifepristone in our clinic or at home, followed by Misoprostol 24-48 hours later.
After the second medication is administered, most individuals start bleeding within 30 minutes to 6 hours. The miscarriage process usually lasts for a few hours, just like a natural miscarriage. Also, like a natural miscarriage, you will have some amount of discomfort (cramping) and bleeding through the process. Your fertility returns to normal immediately after your procedure. WHS suggests a follow-up 2 weeks after taking Misoprostol to make sure your abortion is complete.
